Antioch: Earth Day Cleanup Scheduled at Upper Sand Creek
April 21, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Earth Day has been celebrated worldwide since the 1970’s. Here’s how you can celebrate it in your own community. The students from Earth Team’s Antioch High School intern program are organizing and will share what they have learned over the school year. Plus, you get the chance to explore the verdant Upper Sand Creek Basin, a beautiful part of Antioch that isn’t open to the public yet!
Come get your hands dirty Saturday morning, April 21st from 9:00 to Noon.
Activities will include:
- Basin Cleanup; during the wet season a lot of trash washes into the basin from upstream communities. Earth Team interns will lead groups of volunteers as they scramble to see who can pick up the most trash. The winning team will be awarded a prize, and bragging rights for the rest of the day!
- Restore Native Plants; native plants are adapted to the hot summers and wet winters of East County. We have acorns and buckeyes to plant, as well as a selection of larger plants ready to go in the ground
- Mulching & Maintenance; giving the plants a little TLC before the summer heat kicks in will make it that much easier for them to survive.
- Water quality testing; help collect data, understand the importance of keeping our streams clean, and what you every day actions you can take to help!
Earth Team: Supervisor Diane Burgis, Contra Costa County Flood Control District, Friends of Marsh Creek and Contra Costa Resource Conservation District, are partnering to bring you this fun filled morning of community and giving back.
